This blog post by my teacher at Lamar University's Master's in Education class brought me to this wonderful idea in teaching. Teach to the heart.
In Texas teachers have to teach to the TEKS (http://tea.texas.gov/Curriculum_and_Instructional_Programs/Curriculum/)
but what if they could teach to the heart and really engage students?
